From the Classic · 经曰

赤水之北,有章尾山。有神,人面蛇身而赤,直目正乘,其暝乃晦,其視乃明,不食不寢不息,風雨是謁。是燭九陰,是謂燭龍。

North of the Red Water stands Mount Zhangwei. A deity dwells there, human-faced and serpent-bodied, red all over. Its eyes stand upright and straight: when it shuts them, it is dark; when it opens them, it is light. It does not eat, does not sleep, does not breathe — it only summons wind and rain. It lights up the ninefold darkness. This is Zhulong, the Torch Dragon.

《山海经》· 大荒北经

Go far enough north and the sun stops being a schedule. The Classic of Mountains and Seas knows why: out there, daylight is not the sky's business. It is one deity's. Beyond the Red Water, on Mount Zhangwei, dwells a god with a man's face on a serpent's body, red as fired clay, its eyes set upright in its face like slits. When it closes them, the world goes dark. When it opens them, it is day. It does not eat, does not sleep, does not breathe — breath, when it happens at all, comes out as wind, and what it summons falls as rain. The text gives it a job description instead of a story: it lights the ninefold darkness, where the sun's writ does not run. Its name is Zhulong, the Torch Dragon.

Another chapter records a god of Mount Zhong called Zhuyin — day when it looks, night when it closes its eyes, winter when it blows, summer when it exhales, a thousand li long. Same silhouette, different mountain, and scholars have argued ever since whether these are two titles for one being or one myth split in two. Qu Yuan was already asking, in the ancient 'Heavenly Questions': where the sun does not reach, what does Zhulong shine by? Greece's gods carry torches; this one is the torch. Later legend put an actual candle in its mouth — the classic never says that. The name did the inventing, as names do.

For a dungeon master, Zhulong is less a monster than a cosmology you can steal. Somewhere in your world there is a place the sun ignores, where the party's lanterns are small change. Let them find the eye that opens into morning — and understand, with a chill, that someone can simply choose to close it.
