羽民國在其東南,其為人長頭,身生羽。一曰在比翼鳥東南,其為人長頰。

The Land of the Feathered People lies to its southeast. Its people have long heads, with feathers growing from their bodies. Some say it lies southeast of the Paired-Wing Birds, and that its people have long cheeks.

《山海经》· 海外南经

South of the sea, southeast of the birds that can only fly in pairs, the Classic of Mountains and Seas places a nation of people who grow their own feathers. The entry is two sentences long and utterly calm: their heads are long, and feathers grow from their bodies. Another chapter confirms the plumage and moves on. The classic does not say whether they fly, does not call them monsters, and does not sound the slightest bit surprised. They are filed as geography, like a river mouth or a mountain of jade.

It was the commentators who gave them lift. Guo Pu, the great fourth-century annotator, passes on the legend that the Feathered People do fly — not far, it must be admitted — and that they hatch from eggs, like birds. From there the imagination takes a steep climb. Han dynasty tomb reliefs begin to show feathered immortals attending the Queen Mother of the West, and Daoist tradition adopts 'molting one's feathers and ascending' as the standard phrase for achieving immortality. Whether the Feathered People were the prototype or just fellow travelers on that road is unknowable — but the dream is legible: a body, the story insists, is a thing you can outgrow.

This bestiary files them under Strange Lands, danger one star, and that is the point. They threaten no one. They simply establish that beyond the next ridge, the definition of 'human' loosens. Dungeon masters, that calm is the whole lesson: present a feathered village with no horror music, no agenda, and perfect manners — and watch the players distrust them anyway. The classic's world is wondrous partly because it never needed the villagers to be dangerous.
