From the Classic · 经曰

又東三百里,曰青丘之山,其陽多玉,其陰多青雘。有獸焉,其狀如狐而九尾,其音如嬰兒,能食人;食者不蠱。

Another three hundred li east stands Mount Qingqiu, jade on its south slopes, azure mineral on its north. A beast dwells there, shaped like a fox with nine tails. It cries like a human infant — and it can eat people. Eat its flesh, and you will be free of gu, the creeping poison.

《山海经》· 南山经

On Mount Qingqiu the thing that cries in the dark sounds exactly like a lost baby, and that is the trap. The Classic of Mountains and Seas describes the nine-tailed fox in the flat voice of a census taker: shaped like a fox, nine tails, cries like an infant, can eat people. Nine tails sweep the ferns behind you while the crying comes from somewhere ahead. The ancient authors did not bother to explain which end you should watch. They knew you would find out.

Here is the detail that makes the nine-tailed fox more than a predator: the same passage notes that eating its flesh protects a person from gu, the creeping poison of Chinese sorcery. The beast that devours travelers is also, technically, a medicine. That doubleness is the key to everything that followed. In Han dynasty legend the fox was an omen of a righteous reign: a white nine-tailed fox appeared to Yu the Great at Mount Tu before he founded his dynasty, and Han tomb murals place nine-tailed foxes in the train of the Queen Mother of the West herself. To see one was to be told that heaven approved of the government. Then the story turned. By the Tang, foxes were seducers and impostors in the tales of the strange; by the Ming novel Fengshen Yanyi, a nine-tailed fox wears the body of Daji, the concubine whose cruelty topples a dynasty. Scholars would say the demoness and the omen are separate traditions that fused late. The legend never filed the paperwork.

That fusion is why the nine-tailed fox endures: it is one animal wearing whichever face the era deserves — blessing, bride, or appetite. Dungeon masters, let the players hear a baby crying at the edge of the woods and decide for themselves whether tonight the fox is an omen of favor or a hunter. Either way, the tails number nine — and only one of them has to be real.
